Reward: Instrument Rating
Difficulty: Impossible
Estimated Time: 45 minutes
This reward is for completing the Instrument Rating Checkride. This, however, is not as easy as it sounds. Flight Simulator expects you to fly perfectly steady, and never deviate from any course. The first mistake you make, you'll have to start over again. For those who don't have a lot of patience, I would not recommend attempting this checkride.
Unless you are familiar with instrument flying procedures, you'll want to complete all of the lessons in the Instrument Pilot section beforehand. You'll need to know how to track a VOR course, interpret approach charts, fly a holding pattern, and track an ILS. You'll have to maintain a speed +-10 of 100 knots the entire time, and +-10 degrees of your assigned heading.
Here's what you need to do. When prompted, set your NAV1 to 116.8 and OBS1 to 338. At the same time, it's a good idea to set your NAV2 to 109.6 and OBS2 to 66 (this is to detect when you cross FACTS), and your ADF to 224 (this is to detect when you cross DONDO). Next you'll intercept the NAV1 course and fly to FACTS. After crossing, descend to 3000 ft. You should reset your OBS2 to 25 to detect when you cross MILLT. After crossing, descend to 1600 ft. Use your ADF to determine when you cross DONDO. After crossing, descend to 900 ft. The airport should be in sight soon. DO NOT line up with the runway! Continue tracking the VOR at 900 ft until crossing. Try not to deviate from the OBS, but stay near 338 degrees as you get close. After crossing, your instructor will tell you to execute the missed approach. Climb to 2100 ft and maintain the 338 radial from SEA.
Just before you cross PARKK, your instructor will tell you to turn left to 160 degrees and climb to 3000 ft. As soon as she says this, reset your OBS1 to 140 degrees. Keep flying 160 until you intercept the 140 degree course. Cross the VOR, reset your OBS1 to 320, and continue heading 140 for about a minute. At this point, you need to turn and intercept the 320 degree course inbound. I recommend turning a little to the right, holding for 30 seconds, then turning left to 320. You could also do a teardrop entry, your instructor doesn't care. Confused yet?
The picture below shows the path I flew. I entered from the northwest, then flew all the way down and performed a parallel entry (sort-of). I then entered the holding pattern.
So after you intercept the 320 inbound, turn right to 140 immediately when you are 0.4 nm out from the VOR. Hold for one minute, then turn right and reintercept the 320 degree course.
After crossing the VOR, descend to 2200 ft and turn to 326 degrees. Set NAV1 to ILS 110.9 and OBS1 to 130 (OBS has no effect on ILS in real life). Set your ADF to NOLLA 362. Follow the ADF arrow to NOLLA, but be careful not to deviate more than 10 degrees from 326. Just before reaching NOLLA, turn slightly to the left so as to not overshoot the outbound ILS course. Turn left to 265 degrees as soon as you cross according to the ADF. Fly for one minute, then turn right to 85 degrees. Intercept the ILS when the needle starts to move. Follow the ILS all the way down to the runway. Don't deviate from the course until you are less than 300 ft off the ground. Touchdown and brake to a complete stop.
