Reward: International Humanitarian
Difficulty: Advanced
Estimated Time: 40 minutes
This reward is for completing the Africa Relief mission. You'll start by taking off from Guma International and turning right to follow the road out of town. Your copilot gives you the option to fly above or below the clouds, but if you haven't already noticed the volcano in front of you, now would be a good time to note the volcanic ash floating through the clouds. I would recommend staying low and giving the volcano as much distance as possible. Following the road will keep you a safe distance away.
Your copilot will let you know when you approach the first landing strip (you can also keep an eye on the mission compass). It will be parallel to the road, maybe 300 feet to the left. It's a short runway, so don't land long and keep your approach slow. Taxi over to the tents to drop off the supplies, then taxi back to the south end of the runway. You'll be told about another DC-3 that crash-landed at an airport a few miles north up the road. This becomes your next destination. The Rutshuru airport is parallel to the road as well, running almost north-south. This strip is a lot shorter and narrower, and there's a strong horizontal wind shear on final. Come in as slow as you can and be prepared to slam on the brakes. If you do run off the end, be sure to avoid the crashed plane. Taxi over to the tents and pick up the doctors. They ask you to bring along an extra 800 pounds of medical supplies, making you overweight. I chose to accept the extra load (don't worry, you can still takeoff). Taxi back to the south end of the runway, but this time start your takeoff from before the start of the runway. It's the only way you'll get off the ground in time.
Save the mission once you takeoff. You now have a long flight to Lubero. About 25 miles out, no matter how hard you try to avoid the dark clouds, you're going to lose an engine to the volcanic ash. Your copilot tells you to divert to Rwindi, which is 15 miles behind you. Use the mission compass to find it and set up your approach. I was surprised at how well the DC-3 flew on one engine: I even had to circle to lose some altitude. This is the shortest runway you have landed on yet. Come in as slow as you can without stalling and slam on the binders on toucndown. Come to stop to complete the mission.
